A lot of people saw Jim to be a tough guy because of his aggressive driving style, but he was really a nice person. He did a lot of things for charities and children like racing in the pinewood derby race for the boy scouts. He was also a secretive person as I learned last year while talking to his family members and teammates last year for a Yorker Club Project. Whenever a reporter asked him why his engines were so successful he always smiled, nodded his head and told them that he just did his homework. That was after he had a bad experience with a reporter and the reporter twisted his words around, so he looked like a jerk and he never did a report again. He was a very generous person.... I like to think of him as the Dale Earnhardt of Oswego.
